During the crossing, Lydia meets Lieutenant Orso Della Rebbia, recently demobilized after five years on the battlefield. He wants to settle in a peaceful place on the continent to forget the horrors of war. In the meantime, he returns to his native country, two years after the death of his father, who was allegedly killed by a bandit named Agostini
