What it’s about. 1815, sur un bateau reliant Marseille à la Corse. Le général Neuville emmène sa fille Lydia à la découverte de l'île. Lors de la traversée, la jeune fille tombe sous le charme d'un autre passager : le lieutenant Orso Della Rebbia, fraîchement démobilisé après avoir passé cinq années sur les champs de bataille. Elle apprend qu'il est désigné par la coutume locale comme le futur vengeur de son père, abattu deux ans plus tôt dans le maquis par un tireur embusqué. Mais le coupable, un bandit nommé Agostini, est déjà en prison, et Orso, qui a confiance en la justice républicaine, n'aspire qu'à reprendre la ferme familiale avec sa jeune soeur Colomba. Or, celle-ci ne l'entend pas de cette oreille.
